Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro angered many Brazilians after he answered with “so what?” when asked about the country’s staggering death toll from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
This week, Brazil’s coronavirus deaths topped 5,000 and there are more than 73,000 confirmed cases reported.
Bolsonaro told media he regretted the number of deaths but referencing his surname of “Messias”, which translates to “Messiah” in English, the President said he could not “perform miracles.”
Bolsonaro’s comments come after the replacement of former health minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta last week, following clashes over how to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.
